Pyorrhoea: Promo 2002
Review by: Rafal
First off, let me introduce the band shortly;
"Pyorrhoea was formed in the middle of 2001 by Cyprian and Andy Blakk. After couple of months Daray and The Pope joined the band. In June of 2002 Pyorrhoea entered Hertz studio and recorded "Promo 2002", which contains near 15 minutes of death/grind. New guitarist A.D. joined band in November 2002."
What does Pyorrhoea mean? "It is a disease of the gums. It is one of the most widely prevalent diseases. It affects the membrane surrounding the roots of the teeth and lead to loosening of the teeth and shrinkage of the gum. This disease is the primary cause for tooth loss among adults."
"Promo 2002" is the very first material released so far and what has suprised me, is the fact that guys seem to be a very professional band. Shitload of concerts all over Poland have made Pyorrhoea hard to beat.
What do Pyorrhoea play? They play a very intense, almost chaotic wave of brutal grind/death metal, where there’s no place for free flow of air. As if everything is taken from the best standards (full of Napalm Death, a dose of Cannibal Corpse), but those 4 guys surprise us by adding very bold new stuff that brings a fresh breeze into this genre. Well, just take "Excited by Stench" as a good example of what I'm talking about. The track has got a frantic, quite catchy riff, somewhere at the beginning. It's the most melodic song and my head starts to move everytime I hear it.
What about a sound of "Promo 2002"? It's a typical "Polish" sound, though, mixed with the brutal massive production, that reminds me of all the american stuff. Studio Hertz did the production well and as the result of it all, this is what we end up with; guitars that smells like a rotten, green meat, drums that cut the air more than perfectly, leaving our bodies covered with wounds, nicely pulsating bass, placed somewhere behind it all, making a good soundtrack to this massacre, and of course two vocals - the first being a normal, death metal-ish vomit, the second is what I call Mr. Piggy, who screechs like an animal which is about to be minced. Everything is played and produced correctly, there are no stambles or shoals. These four grinding Poles know what do to with their instruments, attacking and blowing our faces off almost in a second. The word 'sick' could be a feature that characterizes it all.
Now, let's take the real pain in the ass - the length. Maybe 15 minutes of grind are sufficient for you, but when I have taken a finger, I want the whole hand now, if you know what I mean. Well, fuck, I will have to wait until the grinders release a full-length album, but for the time being I'm gonna torture myself with the promo that makes me feel raped and gutted.
The reason why I gave them 7,5 is simple as fuck. I truly believe in this band. I hoped for a good piece of rotting shit, while I got very good piece of rotten meat.
Keep an eye on them. Good work.
7,5 /10
