Review from Live 4 Metal.

Pyorrhoea - Promo 2002 Review By Jo

This seven-track CD may clock in at less than fourteen minutes, but, complying with what could be termed Polish extreme metal tradition, the listener will damn well remember it - and for all the right reasons. Leaving their indelible, blood-splattered imprint within the first few bars of venomous opening track 'Consume You', it's apparent that this quartet, in existence since mid-2001, are an altogether different vat of entrails from many genre contemporaries. Gore/grind can sometimes prove both predictable and superficial. Similarly, a number of outfits of said ilk take themselves seriously to the point at which, in their efforts to shock, they end up themselves a source of unbridled mirth. Yet while blasting as intensely as gore's luminaries - with almost laser-like precision - and satiating the bloodthirsty legions with horror-flick fare in the omnipresent forms of roaring chainsaws, eardrum-shattering shrieks and copious vomiting, marked differences inarguably exist. A greater variety of tempos and rhythms, plus an experimental edge rarely witnessed in such realms characterise Pyorrhoea's sound. 'Crushed', for instance, features blues-rock solo guitar and bass runs which, due to their entirely unexpected appearance, add a certain quirky touch. In fact, while by no means compromising their aggressive stance, this foursome's sense of humour is both apparent and - as I interpret it, at least - intentional. After all, could anyone keep a straight face while composing a song entitled 'Mynameisevaiamsixteenyearsoldiamstillvirginismyfatheragay?'
These fourteen minutes flash by - and leave you pining for another fourteen. Or perhaps even more... How many fledgling outfits are able to produce that effect?
